Heðin Abrahamsen, Tróndur T. Johannesen, Øystein Patursson, and Knud Simonsen have recently had their scientific article published in the international journal Ocean Engineering.
The article, titled "Optimizing volume estimation in aquaculture sea cages: A comparative study of calculation methods and sensor placement", addresses one of the main challenges in fish farming, particularly in areas that are affected by currents and tides that can alter the shape of the netting and reduce space for the salmon.
To address this, the authors used pressure sensors on the nets, which made it possible to monitor the shape of the nets and calculate the volume accordingly. In the article, different techniques for calculating the volume in fish cages are discussed, with examples from measurements taken on a fish cage located at Mowi in Sandsvág. Moreover, through simulations, the authors have determined the number of pressure sensors required and where on the nets they should be positioned to obtain accurate results.
The article is part of a PhD project that Heðin is undertaking. Knud Simonsen, a marine biologist at the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of the Faroe Islands, and Øystein Patursson, director at the research and consultancy firm RAO, are supervisors of the project, while Heðin Abrahamsen and Tróndur T. Johannesen are researchers at Firum.
