On October 20, Fiskaaling hosted a scientific conference titled Vitan til varandi aling (Knowledge for Sustainable Aquaculture). The conference was well attended with around 100 participants including researchers, professionals from the aquaculture industry, representatives from the public sector, and other interested individuals.
At the conference, 12 experienced researchers presented intriguing topics that provided insights into current research activities in the Faroe Islands and neighbouring countries. The presentations were delivered by representatives from institutions such as Havstovan, Sjókovin, Fróðskaparsetri Føroya, Heilsufrøðiliga starvsstovan, Fiskaaling, Nofima (NO), Havforskningsinstituttet (NO), Aqua Kompetance (NO) og SYKE (FI). The main themes covered were delousing and fish welfare, climate change, and economic and societal changes, all of which are relevant to aquaculture.
The first Vitan til varandi aling conference was held online in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The virtual conference was well-received, and participants expressed that there were too few scientific conferences in the Faroe Islands. As a result, the second edition of the conference was held on October 20, 2023, at the Hilton Garden Inn. The organizers received positive feedback once again, indicating the participants' interest in making the conference a recurring event.
For the 2023 conference, the organizers collaborated with researchers to select presentation topics. They are currently working on finding a format for the upcoming conferences, which includes encouraging interested individuals to submit proposals and abstracts for presentations.
