The Ecology Department at Firum works mainly with ecosystems in fjords to better understand the interaction between nature and aquaculture activities. The projects are largely about how the industry affects the environment - both from a biological and chemical perspective.

We conduct long-term studies of these conditions at sea and at the bottom. The purpose is to build knowledge about seasonal changes as well as possible long-term changes. We also have research collaborations with other research institutes, authorities and the aquaculture industry, as well as carry out both research projects and commissioned projects.

In the department, we work, e.g. with understanding the spread and infection of salmon lice and other discharges in the fjords. The aim is to optimise aquaculture in the best possible way. In addition, we work with Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture systems (IMTA), where lumpfish, mussels and seaweed are used as an auxiliary resource in the aquaculture industry. Seaweed farming is a new industry in the Faroe Islands. The Ecology Department works with the interplay between seaweed growth, quality and the environment.

Fish farming continues to move further out into the fjords, where waves and boulders affect the facilities. We examine the well-being of fish under these changed conditions.
