AquaVitae aims to develop solutions for increasing the cultivation of low-trophic species, such as seaweed and sea urchins. The project also aims to enhance sustainable processes with the implementation, among others, of Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture systems (IMTA), in addition to introducing new and sustainable products.
The project is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme and has a focus on the European aquaculture sector. The consortium is multidisciplinary and trans-Atlatnic, with partners in North and South America, South Africa and Europe.
In the Faroe Islands Firum in collaboration with Hiddenfjord investigated the waste streams from salmon farming and the potential for multitrophic aquaculture with blue mussels and seaweed.
